The Natural Market was founded by Joan Reardon, a registered nurse, herbalist and educator. As a nurse, Joan saw the connection between illness and nutritional deficiencies. From that moment, she knew what she was meant to do, educate and empower all patient's to live a disease free life. Joan's passion and drive focusing on the prevention of disease through whole food nutrition has helped not only family and friends, but the whole community. Joan believes we are all meant to live healthy lives and the power rests in you!
Her store, originally named The Natural Shop, first opened in the fall of 1979 at 195 Main Street in Groton, Massachusetts. It was a small space of about 700 square feet, but it was enough to hold a wide selection of bulk herbs, teas, whole grain foods, vitamins, nutritional supplements, essential oils, and other products designed to support a healthy lifestyle.
Eighteen years later, in March of 1997, the business moved down the street into the building which had been the home of the old Groton Post Office. With about 2,000 square feet of space, the new location at 148 Main Street was nearly three times as large as the previous shop, affording room for a greatly expanded selection of whole food groceries, organic produce, supplements, natural body care products, a kitchen and much more.
Today, The Natural Market is a mainstay of the community, serving a broad customer base in North Central Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire.
